[Maine takes a moment to stare at Caboose in disbelief. It's one think with his helmet on but does he look like a lady to you?? Come on Caboose.

After a moment he just gives up and gestures towards the living room where Oreo's massive enclosure sits. He's sitting in his little wading pool at the moment, chilling in the sun coming through the screen door.]

[You are gonna have to spell it out for this guy, Maine. And then tell him what you just spelled.

Caboose bounces happily over to the enclosure and crouches in front of it before going very still and blank. Only after a few seconds like that does he lift his head and ask,] Ah- um, why did I come over here? [oh so that was him trying to remember]

[He's really starting to see why Wash is so tired now. You are a handful and a half.

That said, Maine actually still for a moment too because he also forgot. Still not answering, he trudges over to where he's left his helmet to put it on. Maybe it doesn't matter at this point but WHATEVER MAN. Finally he walks back over to where Caboose is crouching.]

Said you didn't like text.

Oh right! Yeah, I like talking better. [Caboose pushes himself up.] Were you asking stuff about my money because you're kind of bad with it? I can give you some tips. I'm good at investing.

[Somehow, Maine doubts Caboose is actually good at investing. Not that he needs help with that anyway. He shakes his head.]

Just checking on you.

[BL...ANK STARE]

[tilts head] Nobody got shot accidentally. [IS THAT...WHY MAINE IS CHECKING???]

[THAT SPECIFICITY.... IT MEANS THAT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE.]

Good.
[Looking at Caboose, looking at Oreo.]

Do you want to take him for a walk?

[LIKE YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE, MAINE...

But that offer- A QUIET GASP. Is he really this lucky?]

DOES OREO FLY? AM I GOING TO FLY ON A DRAGON BECAUSE HE NEEDS TO USE THE OUTSIDE BATHROOM?

[The misunderstanding continue. Maine's tempted to just let him figure it out himself but he doesn't trust Caboose's mental faculties to register that he isn't flying.]

Doesn't have wings, so no flying.
[In any case, he grabs the lizard and the leash+harness that he was somehow able to find in the big guys size. Once Oreo is strapped in, Maine sets him down and holds out the leash to Caboose.]

[picks up leash

picks up oreo and puts oreo on his helmeted head and shoulders

turns for door ok bye]

[Oh my god it's literally like you need to be babysat. Not that he was going to let Caboose walk the lizard alone anyway, but still. Maine follows Caboose out, and once they're on the sidewalk he does remove Oreo from his perch because come on.]

Okay I will hold the rope part. [whatever that's for

maybe for swinging oreo up onto high places]

OH DO I NEED ONE FOR FRECKLES?! This is his walk also. [starts to tie the other end of the leash around his assault rifle] I am a responsible pet owner.

[Oh, he named his gun. Of course he did. He's not sure how he feels about this being toted around near his lizard but he'll have to just watch him closely, he supposes.

He just sort of rumbles before setting off down the sidewalk towards the objective, the nearby park. C'mon Boose.]

Oh man Miss Maine! This is so exciting! We've never gone a walk before. Wow, you are so tall! I didn't notice how tall you were before, but you're very tall. You must eat a lot of vegetables before you have your desert. And Oreo eats vegetables too! I'm sure Oreo will get as tall as you if he stays healthy. Freckles used to be tall, but he shrank because he got blown up. I've been thinking about putting him into a train so he can always be with me at work, but sometimes I drive different trains.

Do you get to take Oreo with you to work? Does Oreo get lonely by himself at home? OH MY GOD THAT GUY HAS BALLOONS! I like balloons. It's really nice outside!! I like going new places and meeting new people, especially if those people are nice. Do you like meeting new people? You're pretty nice, so I bet you do. I wonder why nobody around here wears any armor? It's probably because they can't go up into space. Or because there's not a whole lot of shooting people here. It's been a really long time since I lived somewhere that didn't have lots of people shooting! But this isn't like the moon at all, because there's a sky and air to breathe and you don't bounce when you jump unless you really try.

THERE'S DOGS OVER THERE! Are we going to the dog park?! I'm going to pet so many dogs! But not a lot because Freckles will get jealous and this is our walk time. I'm so happy you came with us on walk time! Thank you Maine, thank you Oreo!

[Someone should tell him sometime so he doesn't have to worry.

Now, you might think that Maine would be annoyed by all the talking, quiet as he generally is. But no, he actually doesn't mind the noise. Caboose seems to be enjoying himself and that's not bad. A tad bit overwhelming, maybe. At least it's pretty clear Caboose doesn't expect answers to his tidal wave of questions.

He basically has to reach out and pat Caboose on his helmeted head. Good kid. Even if he's technically an adult.]

Be gentle with the dogs

real dogs are not robot dogs, RIGHT

it actually works out pretty well, too! caboose throws sticks for the dogs if their owners allow, which isn't so bad since they're sticks and he can't really do much damage with those. he does accidentally hit a jogger. the jogger is goodnatured enough to let it go.

then he finds a stray tennis ball, hurls it into the air and yells,] FRECKLES GET IT!

[and the assault rifle jerks up in his hands and shoots it out of the sky. it of course looks like caboose did it. there is some screaming

there is a lot of screaming]

No- no it's okay! It's okay. Freckles was just getting the ball. He's still not so good with that one...

[this is what wash deals with, maine]

[OH MY GOD THIS EXPLAINS SO MUCH! Maine immediately scoops up a rather indignant Oreo, who had been enjoying himself despite the gunshots. With his other hand he takes hold of Caboose's upper arm and firmly pulls him towards the exit and out of the park.

He really can't risk another run in with the cops. Oreo got some exercise, so now it is Time To Go Home.]

[AH yes, Caboose recognizes this. it is running time, so he runs along with maine, easily keeping pace. this freak is in unreasonably good shape.]

That was nice! What a nice run. The park was pretty nice too until all the screaming happened. [because of you, buddy, that was 100% your fault]

[Maine is glad he at least understands what they are doing even if he doesn't grasp why.]

Should be careful with that gun

Yeah, me and Freckles are still working on tricks. I don't think whoever had him before trained him a whole lot? But, y'know, he can do other stuff like roll over, and he can do squats and he's mostly pretty good. [Slows down to a walk beside Maine once they're far enough away.] Can Oreo do any tricks?

[Maine shakes his head, still carrying the large lizard in his arms. He's not sure if lizards can even learn tricks, actually.]

Where'd you get him?

I found him in the wreck! We were in a spaceship and it crashed, and we lived in the canyon for a while after that. And I found Freckles and he was stuck in the wreck with all these rocks and bodies on him, so I got him out and fixed him up and here we are! [Caboose cuddles him.] Rescue pet.
